Uniforms for School in the local area
The Daren family started selling Schoolwear from 389 Barking Road, opposite East Ham Town Hall in 1920. The original business started by making tailor made Men’s and Ladies suits as well as uniforms for school in the local area, with East Ham Grammar School for Girls being amongst their early customers for school clothes.
The Daren’s had four sons and one daughter, with all four sons serving in the Forces during the Second World War. Nathan was killed in action during 1941 whilst Sidney was severely injured but recovered before moving to South Wales. It was there that he opened Textile and Toy Shops. Reub immigrated to America where he worked in Ladies swimwear until as recently as 1995.
The original School Wear business
That left Alec and Miriam to carry on the original school wear business. They decided to split the business into two parts. Alec remained to carry on the bespoke tailoring and Miriam, now joined by her husband Arnold, expanded the school uniform business into children’s fashions as well.
By the middle 1970’s Miriam and Arnold were joined by their son Howard and they expanded to be trading school wear in Bishops Stortford, Dartford, Grays, Hoddesdon, Maidstone, and Ware. Their lines of school trousers, school skirts, school shorts and PE kit going from strength to strength.

Ian Howard are now one of the foremost school uniform shops in the country and now supply to around 90 schools from those locally in Newham, Redbridge, Barking, Dagenham and Havering in Essex, and all the way to South Shields and even Norway!
